House GOP dials back abortion bill

Republicans in an Iowa House committee are advancing an abortion-related measure, but without a controversial provision.  The Human Resources committee voted Wednesday night to send a ban on abortions after 20 weeks to the house floor.  The action came after Republicans reversed course from a plan introduced earlier this week to ban an abortion after a doctor detects a fetal heartbeat.  The Senate-passed bill included a prison sentence of up to ten years for a doctor who performs an abortion after 20 weeks, but the House removed that provision.  The bill also includes no exception for rape and incest, but does allow for abortions if the mother's life is at risk.
