Ames hit by rental housing law change

The City of Ames is now in the position of dealing with what could be a new state law on local rental housing rules.  The Iowa Senate Tuesday passed a House bill forbidding cities from using family relationships in determining rental occupancy.  Mayor Ann Campbell told the City Council Ames and a number of other cities have to figure out what comes next as City Manager Steve Schainker says he and other department heads will meet soon to start the conversation. Ames Democrat Herman Quirmbach was one of only six senators to vote against the bill.  If Gov. Branstad signs it, the rental housing law will take effect January 1st, 2018.
