A newborn girl born at an Iowa hospital is in the custody of the Department of Human Services after being declared a "safe haven" baby. It's the 28th time officials have used the state's "safe haven" procedures since the law went into effect in 2002. A court hearing to terminate parental rights will be held within a month. Under the "safe haven" law, parents in crisis are protected from prosecution for abandonment by allowing them to safely and anonymously leave an infant less than two weeks old at a hospital or health care facility with no questions asked.
