The City of Ames' effort to build a community solar farm is taking another step forward. The City Council this week signed a letter of intent with California-based Forefront Power to put in the farm on Airport Rd. near Highway 30. Electric Services Director Don Kom says more shares of the project under the city's "Sun Smart" program need to be sold before work can begin. He says so-called "Power Packs" the city is using as an investment tool will cost less than $350 and they're more than half-way to the goal of 80 percent sold. Kom says customers who invest in the "Sun Smart" program will not only get the satisfaction of investing in renewable energy, they'll get a 20 year credit on their electric bill equal to their investment .
