Ames Police use GTSB cash for texting enforcement

The Ames Police Department got some state help last week looking for people texting and driving.  Cmdr. Geoff Huff says officers working with Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau overtime funds netted eight citiations for violations of the law that took effect last July.  He says officers also issued a couple of texting-and-driving warnings that were less about the officers' kindheartedness, and more about how hard the law is to enforce. Huff says the officer has to peer in a violator's car to the see the offense, then make sure it wasn't a permitted use of that electronic device. On a positive note--Huff says Ames drivers continue to wear seat belts at , or above, the state's 97-percent average.
