City Council enacts gateway moritorium

The Ames City Council Tuesday imposed a temporary moritorium on any new development in a Downtown Gateway area--land south of the railroad tracks between Clark and Kellogg avenues.  Planning and Housing Director Kelly Diekmann says the construction pause gives the city time to implement zoning changes that come with the establishment of the gateway area. Developer Chuck Winkleblack objected to the moritorium, saying it's standing in the way of a project he's got in the works.  He says the council acted with rare speed in implmenting the moritorium by suspending it's rules and approving it on all three readings Tuesday. The Downtown Dateway area moritorium is in effect until July 2nd.
