Flood risks with more rain coming

The flood risk in Ames remains low despite recent heavy rains and more rain in the forecast. Water and Pollution Control Director John Dunn says it helps that it's been pretty dry the last few weeks.  He says Skunk River flooding in the Ames area is almost always driven by rain that falls in the basin south of Highway 20 near Fort Dodge. Dunn also says the Squaw Creek is more susceptible to flash flooding from local heavy rains.

Meantime--Iowa is getting ready for round three of severe weather Thursday. The National Weather Service says cities including Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Ottumwa are all under an enhanced risk of severe weather. Damaging winds and large hail are possible and that would come on top of storm damage from Tuesday and Wednesday. A tornado warning was issued yesterday in parts of southern Iowa while a number of severe thunderstorm warnings were issued as heavy rain moved through the state.
