I'm a native of Maplewood, Minnesota, a suburb of St. Paul. It was there that I was inflicted with the curse of being a Minnesota Vikings fan. There is still no known cure, though many times I wish there was. I'm also an avid follower of the Minnesota Twins and of course, the Iowa State Cyclones.
So you may have seen that Oregon’s football program got what amounts to a ruler across the knuckles from the NCAA for some recruiting violations and thought, “Hey, I bet this means Iowa State will get off easy, too!”. In the immortal words of Lee Corso, “Not so fast, my friends.” It’s important to remember at a time like this that the NCAA Committee on Infractions doesn’t compare violations cases. They don’t use precedent. One program’s punishment doesn’t translate into similar punishment for similar cases. They treat every investigation on its own merits and go from there. So its possible that even though ISU’s violations have been much less publicized (one of the bright spots of being and under-the-radar program), the punishment could be greater in some ways than what Oregon got. The Ducks lost one scholarship. One. I’d bet ISU will see more than that since their violations were committed in several different sports. Each could be punished separately. A similar length of probation is likely and similar reductions in official visits could be in the offing as well. Just don’t get any ideas that the NCAA has it in for Iowa State if they come down a bit harder than they did in the Oregon case. The NCAA is as willfully arbitrary as ever so don’t take it personally.
