I'm a native of Maplewood, Minnesota, a suburb of St. Paul. It was there that I was inflicted with the curse of being a Minnesota Vikings fan. There is still no known cure, though many times I wish there was. I'm also an avid follower of the Minnesota Twins and of course, the Iowa State Cyclones.
Well, here we are folks. The moment we’ve all been waiting for. It’s time once again to play “Who’s your quarterback?”. It’s a game Cyclones fans are all too familiar with. After all the uncertainty at signal caller the last two seasons, you had to know somewhere in the back of your mind that it would crop up again this season. The only downside to this year’s edition is that no one has a name nearly as cool as Steele Jantz. Other than that, it seems things are right back where they’ve been. A handful of injuries and a dismal offensive performance at Baylor brings us to the choice at hand: Sam Richardson or Grant Rohach. Slingin’ Sam has been dealing with a bad ankle since the second half of the season opener. Rohach, until Saturday, didn’t seem ready to take the reigns. Admittedly, he didn’t seem ready even after taking the reigns, but it’s not like Richardson was exactly tearing it up either. The pair ran the offense with about equal effectiveness against the Bears, which is to say no effectiveness whatsoever. So ISU coach Paul Rhoads has thrown open the gates to yet another QB competition. Or controversy. Whatever you want to call it. Maybe he’s just trying to light a fire under Richardson. Maybe he’s just trying to get fans to talk about something other than firing offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham. Maybe he’s just as clueless as the rest of us after getting butchered by Baylor (though I doubt it). Any way you slice it, we should be used to this by now. So may the best man win. After all, it’s only a game, right?
