Since his start in radio news, Trent has won awards from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association, the Nebraska Associated Press, and the Iowa Broadcast News Association.
Rice also serves as the 2009-2010 President of the Iowa Broadcast News Association.
Rice is a native of Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He and his wife Solveig have been married since 2000. They live in Ames where he enjoys golf, reading, movies, music college football, and the heartbreak that comes from being a Minnesota Vikings fan. Trent and Solveig have twin daughters Annika and Kaija and a son, Erik, who shares the same birthday as his sisters, just five years later.
When it comes to this IRS scandal, I think lots of critics of the government are (for their own reasons) losing teh forest for the trees. Let's remember what is at stake here for all those conservative groups what think they've been so wronged.
No one can honestly say, as much as they'd like to, that they were prohibited from the government from organizing. There are no claims of "we were fobidden from organizing, becasue..." The Constitution's first amendment guarantees us the right to "peaceably assemble"--not the right to "raise unlimited sums of money without telling anyone where that money came from." And that's the crux of the matter.
All these groups, that probably DO have political aims, want the goverment to believe they don't. They say they're all about "education" and "advocacy." 501(c)4 tax-exempt status means groups can raise money without disclosing donors, but can't back a specific candidate or ballot issue. It's a a ham-fisted attempt to use U.S. tax code as an instrument of campaign finance reform. And, as we're learning, it doesn't work.
All that being said, it doen't matter. When the IRS copped to the fact that some of it's staffers targeted "tea party" and "patriot" groups for extra scrutiny, it lost any ability to defend itself from the littany of baseless accusations that are being thrown it way. For reasons beyond my comprehension, conservative groups love to play the "persecution complex" card, and this will feed into it.
